PROVENANCE Private collection, Lyon area Reza Derakshani Born in Sangsar, a small village in northeastern Iran, Reza Derakshani is a multidisciplinary artist attached to his roots. Having grown up nomadically in the mountains surrounded by horses and landscapes as far as the eye can see, he has a particular vision of natural beauty. A child prodigy, Derakshani received his first commission at the age of nine and exhibited for the first time at the age of 19 at the Ghandriz Art Gallery in Tehran. He graduated from Tehran University in 1976 before continuing his training at the Pasadena School of Art in California and returning to Iran to teach at Tehran University and at the School of Decorative Arts. His neo-expressionist tendencies linked him to abstract expressionism and the revival of painting in the United States and Europe in the 1980s. In New York, he associated with several artists who were also his friends, including Francesco Clemente, Shirin Neshat and Cy Tombly. After a period of pure abstraction, he reintegrated figurative elements from both Western and Eastern culture into his works, achieving a multicultural synthesis that took the confluence of several civilisations into account. After living in Italy, Derakshani returned to Iran. Today he divides his time between Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Austin, Texas. He works in several media
