PROVENANCE Galerie Maurice Garnier, Paris Private collection, Suisse Private collection, Liban From 1965 to 1970 Buffet had a studio, «La Vallée», in Saint-Cast in Brittany. During the five years of this Breton interlude, Bernard Buffet painted the region and its villages, monuments, ports and ships. Eglise de Landerneau, painted in 1968, belongs to this period. This is a large oil on canvas with a dark palette and the sharp lines typical of his style. The composition highlights the monumentality of the church, while the parallel between the bell tower and the Crucifix in the foreground leads the viewer’s eye to a lighter sky: all elements conveying the mystical aspect of Buffet’s work. Bernard Buffet Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) is considered one of the major painters of the 20th century in France and a central figure of the Expressionist movement. The public were wildly enthusiastic about him early on, though he was also disparaged by the critics. His work of the late 1940s and 1950s, which attracted much attention at the time, was characterised by dark colours reflecting the post-war years. During that time, he finally adopted the sharp lines that became the unique trademark of his style. This period marked the beginning of Buffet’s collaboration with the gallery owner Maurice Garnier, who exhibited and promoted his work throughout his life. As Buffet’s resounding commercial success grew, his lavish lifestyle, considered ostentatious, attracted critical opprobrium and made the headlines of leading magazines.
