MAHIEDDINE BAYA (1931-1998)
Musicenne et danseuses aux oiseaux, 1975 Gouache and watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right 99.5 x 148.5 cm à vue 39 3/8 x 58 11/16 in. Mahieddine Baya Born in the Algiers region, Mahieddine Baya (1931-1998) had an atypical life and career. Her early talent immediately drew notice and at the age of 16, in 1947, she exhibited at the Maeght Gallery. She met the greatest artists in Paris, including Braque and Picasso. In the 1950s, Baya devoted herself to her family, taking up painting again only in 1963. Her talent and inspiration remained intact and exhibitions were devoted to her work, notably in 1963 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers and 1964 at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. Until the end of her life, Baya took part in exhibitions worldwide, from France to North Africa, Japan and Cuba. The works presented here are perfectly in line with her style, which is related to Art Brut and recalls the oriental imagination. She depicted wonderful houses and gardens, often with dancing women, marvellous flowers and rare birds. Her paintings feature shimmering, immediately recognisable colours including indigo blues, bright yellows, pinks and greens.
