GEN PAUL (1895-1975)
Le guitariste Lithograph on paper, annotated artist’s print and signed lower right. 54 x 38.5 cm 21 1/4 x 15 3/16 in. We thank the Gen Paul Committee for including this work in its documentation. Le Guitariste also features bold composition, Cubist influence, diagonal lines, stripes or zigzags and the juxtaposition of abstract with realistic motifs. However, Paul chose not to colour the composition, probably to let the gestures and movements alone translate the musical rhythm and harmony. Similarly, in the Clown Saxophoniste, perhaps one of Paul's most famous works, the forms’ animated content seems to escape from their contours, making patches of colour dance in the void between the lines. In contrast to the darker German Expressionists of this period, who already seemed to herald the Second World War, Paul's works are cheerful and optimistic, reflecting his lust for life and the simplicity of everyday existence. The saxophonist's face is pink, his cheeks puffed up with air, but above all he is passionate and caught up in the excitement of making music.
