We thank Mr. Zhang Dali for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. PROVENANCE Private collection, Paris Born in 1963 in Harbin, China, Zhang Dali studied Fine Arts and worked as a photographer. At the same time, he made a name for himself as one of the first Chinese street artists. In the 1990s, he drew his profile on buildings that were marked condemned by the authorities by means of a tag painted on the walls. As his fame grew considerably in the early 2000s, Zhang Dali decided to capitalise on it to express his social beliefs. He especially drew itinerant construction workers who went from one building site to the next and worked in dangerous and insecure conditions. They inspired the artist to create his Offspring series, depicting men from the Chinese countryside who came to work in the large cities. Zhang Dali represents them as suspended and shackled in all sorts of strange postures, all the same colour and size, stamped with a serial number. Zhang Dali’s desire to denounce certain aspects of society also appears in his series titled Life is a meteor in a desolate universe, which was his street artist pseudonym, and that he created as a homage to victims everywhere. He started the series by depicting the assault rifle of the same name and then moved on to using the name as a subject in his canvasses. These series of panels we’re presenting today belongs to the complex and coherent Life is a meteor in a desolate universe ensemble. It shows a life-size shirtless man, painted through juxtaposing these AK-47 motifs. Zhang Dali has exhibited in China as well as in London at the Saatchi Gallery, in New York and San Francisco, in Korea and also at the Rencontres d'Arles.
