PROVENANCE Probablement offert par l’artiste à monsieur Charles L., ancien Président de la cour d’appel de Hanoï, puis rapporté depuis l’Indochine par son épouse. Conservé familialement. Collection privée, Paris NGUYEN PHAN CHANH Born in 1892 in Thien Bat, Ha Tinh province, into a family of scholars, Nguyen Phan Chanh received a traditional artistic education in Hue and studied calligraphy. In 1925, at 33, he was part of the first intake of students at the Indochina School of Fine Arts, attending the same classes as Le Van De, Mai Thu and Le Pho. Specialising in ink and gouache painting on silk, which suited him better than oil painting, he graduated in 1930. Nguyen Phan Chanh’s paintings are filled with images of the countryside, where brown and ochre tones evoke its colours and reflect its inspiration. His paintings were not very open to Western pictorial values. The simple, plain anatomies of his figures, the close-up planes and the use of flat colours provide an intimist, poetic vision of Vietnam.
