NGUYEN DUC NUNG (1914-1983)
Fillette au panier de fleurs, 1936 17 ¾ 24 1/3 in. Ink and color on silk, signed and dated lower left PROVENANCE Collection privée, Paris This Girl with a Basket of Flowers of 1936 offers us a unique insight into his first works as an artist. The girl is sitting dreamily on the floor, holding a flower. The top of her figure contrasts with the background of plants in the composition, and the soft colours give this vision an idyllic feel. NGUYỄN ÐỨC NÙNG Nguyen Duc Nung was a Vietnamese artist, born in 1914 in Phu Lam, near Hanoi. He was part of the ninth intake of students at the Indochina School of Fine Arts in 1933. Shortly after his graduation in 1938, the Vice-Governor of Tonkin, Pierre Delsalle, offered to provide funds so that he could continue his studies in France. He declined, preferring to stay in Hanoi to help his family financially. A specialist in the art of lacquering, Nguyen Duc Nung created numerous works imbued with Western realism, reflecting a genuinely modern version of this Vietnamese technique. During his studies, however, he also explored various other techniques like ink drawing and painting on silk.
