So manufacturers had to adapt, and Volkswagen was one of the first to propose a new sports car philosophy. A major attraction at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Golf GTI 1.6 arrives on the market with the label of «Volkswagen’s fastest ever». But the German automaker is still far from imagining that it has just uncovered the segment benchmark. Lightweight (only 810 kg) and lively with its 4-cylinder, 110-hp engine, Volkswagen is striking and gives ideas not only to the competition, but also to private tuners.Against all odds, Volkswagen France, in partnership with the German tuner Oettinger, will present a limited edition of its Golf GTI 1.6, which will be produced in 1,250 units, all dedicated to the French market. We are in 1981 and the tuning trend is slowly taking hold in France. From an aesthetic point of view, the differences are noticeable, with the installation of the BBS kit which was very fashionable at the time, the Golf GTI Oettinger will see accomplished sports car appendages pushing it on the wings but also at the front with a specific spoiler. Here and there, the «GTI 16S» or «16-valve» badges are proudly displayed on the exterior and inside the cabin, while the 14-inch ATS wheels finish distinguishing this limited edition. Quite an era!
