BMW 1600 GT 1968
Rare model Known history New engine French registration papers (as a historic vehicle) Chassis number: W001348 The BMW 1600 GT is a rare twodoor coupé, developed from the Glas 1300 and 1700 GT models. In 1963, the German manufacturer Glas turned to Pietro Frua in Turin to design a distinctive coupé. The result was the Glas 1300 GT, with inimitable Italian styling, a long, sloping bonnet, two slender bumpers and an overall fastback shape. Frua was responsible for building the bodies, with final assembly taking place in the Glas factory in Germany. The engine came from the 1304 saloon and developed 75 bhp. The dashboard was resolutely sporty with round dials and the essential woodrimmed steering wheel. The chassis was built on a monocoque platform and featured independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. Braking was taken care of by two discs at the front and drums at the rear. In 1965, the engine capacity increased to 1682 cc and maximum power to 100 bhp. This new engine enabled the coupé – which weighed only 920 kg (2028 lb) – to reach 180 kph (112 mph). Glas ran into financial problems and was bought by BMW in 1966. In the end, 5562 1300 and 1700 GT coupés were built badged as Glas models. The following year, BMW fitted a new powertrain to the coupé, installing the engine and gearbox assembly from the BMW 1600 Ti, which produced 105 bhp and was fuelled by two dualbarrel carburettors. The body received a BMW radiator grille, the rear lights from the BMW 1602 and an anticorrosion treatment. Lastly, the live rear axle was replaced by an assembly featuring independent semi-trailing arms, which considerably improved the roadholding. From 1967 to 1968, only 1257 examples of the BMW 1600 GT were built. Our 1600 GT coupé was first registered on 8 November 1968 at Mâcon. Its first owner passed on the car to her goddaughter on 30 May 2000. Its odometer is now showing 108,979 km (67,716 miles), which is undoubtedly its
