BORNÉO, KALIMANTAN, GRANDE ILES DE LA SONDE, INDONÉSIE FIN XIXe-DÉBUT XXe SIÈCLE
Two large Hempatungs forming pendants and representing protective ancestors of the village. Located at the entrance of the village, protective or threatening, these effigies were carved in a very hard, rot-proof wood. In these climates that are too hot and saturated with humidity, subject to malnutrition, insect bites and anemia caused by leeches, it is difficult, out of context, to imagine the sculptor's perseverance in tearing out of the tree trunk, with less than rudimentary tools, these very accomplished heavy wooden sculptures. H. 255 cm (Hardwood)
