JAPON PÉRIODE EDO, XVIIIE SIÈCLE
Important painting in colors and gold highlights on paper, representing the Kammuryôju-Kyô hensô, or Taima Mandala. His iconography is based on the Kammuryôju-Kyô or Amitâyurdhyâna Sûtra, the "Sûtra of the contemplations of Amitayus Buddha". It is the Paradise of the Pure Land of the West, where the Amida Buddha (Amitâbha), Buddha of the afterlife, presides. The latter is enthroned in his palace, sitting in meditation on a lotus, surrounded by Kannon and Seishi, and many bodhisattvas. The central part is surrounded all around by several scenes illustrating the discovery and themes of the Sûtra des Contemplations, each scene identified by a small cartouche. Dim. 141 x 66 cm (Some folds and wear; framed under glass) Note: The "Sutra of Contemplation of Amitayus Buddha" is one of the three main sutras of Pure Land Buddhism (Jôdo-kyô), a doctrine of the Tendaï school, a branch of Mahâyâna Buddhism, the first known illustration of which, preserved in the Taima-dera temple of Nara, dates from the end of the 8th century.
