GOETHE JOHANN WOLFGANG VON (1749-1832)
L.A.S. "Most confidentially [I] add to the enclosed promem[oria]: that it would be desirable in every sense the matter would now come to order. I have researched the circumstances in all directions and the prince is, to be precise, very compromised, the young man [Weller] is very good, but Knebel is beside himself. For me it is the main point that I trust this subject myself and know no better to oppose the current library staff. As an adjutant he would be a dyer in this business [Johann Michael Christoph FÄRBER, librarian in Weimar] in the other. It is neither possible nor decent to personally do everything. Have Ew. Excellency the mercy to rethink the matter, Count EDLING [Minister of State] did not seem averse to cooperate [...] If it were not contrary, sent the young man. You won't be surprised that the prince noticed him. And his beautiful hand will benefit our registers and catalogues. So much! and so much apology"...
