Signed letter, signed « Geo. Stephenson », Westminster 7 February 1844, to James BROWNELL BOOTHBY; 3 pages, in-8 format (slitting to central fold, repaired); in English. Rare letter relative to the construction of a railway. He regrets not having had the pleasure of seeing him, about their project. He considered the layout of the line this way because he does not want to encroach on any playground. He abandoned the route following the river because it is certain to meet a strong opposition in this district; his plan is to obtain a lease from the owners of the land with the possibility of establishing an act of a certain duration without referring to Parliament. If nobody comes to thwart his project, he has great hope to convince the owners of the land to enter his views. He will simply start by creating a coal line, and for the transportation of the country’s produce, it may be necessary to say that they will start with horsepower. However he will be guided by the opinion of the owners of the land, if they want to join the project. He proposes an appointment at his place, the day after the assembly in Norwich...
