Four atlases in homogeneous bindings, Nicolas Sanson’s “Atlas of the Four Continents”. Double-page maps with outer delimitations colored in wash. First editions: Europe, which is the work of his son Nicholas II, in 1647 (Sanson VII), then the work of Nicolas I Sanson father alone after the passing of his son in 1648, with Asia in 1652 (Sanson III), Africa in 1656 (Sanson I) and America in 1657 (Sanson II). Contemporary or near-contemporary full limp vellum (homogeneous bindings), gilt-tooled, smooth spines adorned with a repeated « bird » tool, gilt lettering and gilt double fi lets, boards with a double frame of gilt and blind-stamped fi lets, gilt stars at outer corners of frame, central gilt « bird » tool at center of boards, titles added in ink on the boards (spots on boards; some wormholes or frayed paper, a few tears, a bit of foxing, overall in fi ne condition). Dimensions: 180 x 245 mm. Provenance 1. George Compton, Earl of Northampton (probably 4th Earl of Northampton, 1664-1727), heraldic bookplate dated 1703, pasted on the verso of title-pages (Africa, Asia, America). - 2. Printed label: «Castle Ashby Library» (Europe (affi xed upside down on the lower plate), Asia, Africa, America). Castle Ashby belonged to the Marquess of Northampton [see The Earl Compton.
