RALEIGH WALTER (1552 ?-1618). Marin et explorateur anglais.
Signed document, signed with the rare alternate spelling, “W Rawley,” one page (8 ¼ inches wide by 6 inches high; circa 11,8 x 16 com), Isle of Wight, 15 August [1580], framed document with an engraving; in Latin and English. Rare receipt signed by the young Walter Raleigh during the Second Desmond Rebellion in Ireland. The twenty-eight-year old Walter Raleigh (later Sir Walter Raleigh) signed this receipt for expenses relating to his troops, while on the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, awaiting the invasion of Ireland during the second Desmond rebellion. Launched by the FitzGerald dynasty of Desmond in Munster, Ireland, against English rule (and its spread of Protestantism), the second rebellion ended disastrously for the Irish but brilliantly for Raleigh who would use his military success to become a favorite at court enjoying rewards services in Ireland. (One of his immediate rewards was that he became the recipient of 40,000 acres in Munster making him one of its largest landholders.) “Memorand[um] that I Walter Rawley Gent have had and received the day and yere abovesaide of S[i]r Edwarde Horsey knighte Capteyne of the Isle of Wighte for victuall and lodginge for one hundred souldyers under my conduction for Her Ma[jes]te service in Ireland duringe the tyme of myne and their aboode in the saide Isle of Wight That is to saie from the XXXth daye of July in the yere abovesaide until the XVth daie of Auguste viz for fifteene daies at VIs a man by the daye the some of XXXVIILS XS”.
