NEWTON ISAAC (1642-1727).
Autograph MANUSCRIPT; half-page in-fol. (small loss to the margin, affecting the end of a few lines); in English. Working manuscript tied to Newton’s theological studies relative to Early Christianity. The manuscript sports at its beginning a chapter number (VI) and refers to EUSEBIUS and his Historia ecclesiastica, a work that Newton owned in two copies [Harrison, The Library of Isaac Newton, 589 and 590]. During the first decades of Early Christianity, Christians in a given city were governed by a council of priests or elders and the president of this council was the bishop of the city. The Bishop of a given city was not to meddle in the affairs of another city, except by publishing « letters of admonition ». Bishops of different cities only started to gather in councils after the reign of Emperor Commodus. Bishops then began to assemble in provincial councils, to oppose heresies, such as the Cataphrygians. The Bishop of the main city presided the council and held the title of “Metropolitan”…
