Signed autograph letter, signed « Lafayette », on board La Victoire 20 April [1777], to the comte de CHARLUS; 1 page in-8 format, address with wax seal with his arms; in French. Letter dating from the first voyage of Lafayette to America. The ship La Victoire left Bordeaux on 23 March 1777, stopped over in San Sebastian : Lafayette met with the comte de Broglie and returned to the ship on 17 April 1777. On 20 April 1777, the ship set off for America, reaching South Inlet near Georgetown on 12 June 1777. Armand-Charles-Augustin de La Croix de Castries, comte de CHARLUS (1756-1842), future duc de Castries was the son of the maréchal de Castries, Minister of War. Along with the marquis de Chastellux, he was a close friend of Lafayette; he was « aide-de-camp » to the comte de Rochambeau during the American War of Independence.
