Autograph POEM, SIGNED LETTER and PHOTOGRAPHY with an autograph dedication, 1939-1941, to the psychoanlayst Edrita FRIED; three documents matted together and framed. Group of three items given by Albert Einstein to Dr. Edrita Fried, of which one is relating to the Atomic bomb, the other two items related to Edrita Fried who helped Einstein draft his letters relating to the invention. Dr. Edrita FRIED (1911-1981) was a psychoanalyst who came to America in 1938 after receiving her Ph.D at the University of Vienna in her native city. Not long after her arrival in the United States, she met Einstein and helped him with composing letters in English, in particular the letter concerning the atomic bomb addressed to President Roosevelt. Typed copy of the first portion of Einstein’s letter to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 2 August 1939, regarding the possibility of developing an Atomic bomb, signed in full “Albert Einstein,” in English (Dimensions: 8,6 x 15,5 cm) (light browning and staining). “Some recent work by E. Fermi and L. Szilard, which has been communicated to me in manuscript, leads me to expect that the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source of energy in the immediate future. It may become possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements would be generated. This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of bombs, and it is conceivable – though much less certain – that extremely powerful bombs of a new type may thus be constructed. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat and exploded in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory.
