EINSTEIN ALBERT (1879-1955).
Signed autograph letter, signed « A. Einstein », Berlin 16 January 1930, to Oscar WASSERMANN and Mrs (Madame); half-page, in-4 format, his letterhead, envelope. [Oscar WASSERMANN (1869-1934) was Director-General of the Deutsche Bank He was active in Jewish organisations and associations and was favorable to the colonization of Palestine. He married Käthe Haupt]. Einstein thanks the couple for their invitation. His wife claims that he should not write. But he has dared nonetheless knowing that Wassermann knows Einstein’s favourable opinion towards him and his admirable actions (« Ihrem wunderbaren Wirken »). Einstein is not capable of realizing his work with his present unstable health (« Ich kann nämlich meinen ernsten Aufgaben nur dann einigermassen gerecht werden bei meinem labilen Gesundheits Zustande, wenn ich mich von dem inoffiziellen gesellschaftlichen Leben zurückziehe »). Wassermann’s “admirable actions” certainly refer to his numerous activities in favour of the promotion of Jewish colonization of Palestine. Wassermann had invited Einstein to the honorary committee of Pro-Palästina Komitee Sold with signed autograph letter by Elsa EINSTEIN (who also wrote on the envelope) to Mrs.Wassermann, explaining her husband’s attitude who is sometimes forced to evolve socially, if obligated, during official instances. Unless obliged, Einstein stays away from such social obligations. Should life be less complicated, he would be able to see the people that truly interest him.
