Translator’s personal copy enriched with autograph letters. On the flyleaf, Edouard Heckel handwrote the title-page and added: « Dernier ouvrage botanique de Ch. Darwin mort le 19 Avril 1882 à Beckenham, Down ». There is no title-page in this copy other than the one supplied by the translator. Charles DARWIN. 2 signed letters to Édouard Heckel. Down (Kent) 31 December 1876 (3 p. in-8 format): Darwin states that he would be honored to have his book translated by Heckel and and has written to the publisher Reinwald who ensured the translations of his other books. He is sure that the notes provided by Heckel will add to the interest of the book and he would like to read them; 19 February 1877 (1 p. in-8 format), signalling an error of importance in his Cross and Self Fertilisation… Francis DARWIN. Signed autograph letter, dictated by his father Charles DARWIN, Down 26 novembre 1880 (3 p. in-8 format), with indications on the movement of flowers conveyed to Heckel ; the letter also states that it is the Board of the Royal Society that elects members and it is not customary to recommend someone. Charles NAUDIN (1815-1899, biologist and botanist). Signed autograph letter, Antibes 17 novembre 1882, to Edouard Heckel (4 p. in-8 format, letterhead “Villa Thuret. Laboratoire de l’Enseignement supérieur”). Lengthy and interesting scientific exchange relative to the Heckel’s study on movement in plants.
