BERNANOS GEORGES (1888-1948)
65 autograph letters signed « G. Bernanos » (one is signed « votre vieil ami » [Your old friend] and one is unsigned), 1939-1942, to Charles OFAIRE, in French ; approximately 170 pages in-4 or in-8 (perforations), letters mounted on tabs on vélin d’Arches paper ; bound in a halfbinding of green-morocco (faded spine), slipcase (Devauchelle). Important correspondence sent from Brazil and addressed by Bernanos to his friend and publisher Charles Ofaire. These letters reflect well the thought and personality of Bernanos, and especially his spirit of resistance in all circumstances. « My way of proceeding has always been to scandalize a few imbecils to force the others to think » (10 February 1941). Writing is a tool to alert individuals, particularly the French, to the causes he defends: “Although I feel quite unable to defend my personal interests, I do not want people over there to think that I have abandoned my books to their faith...” (June 1941). The letters reflect his continuing publications from abroad and his commitment to political and literary affairs. Sold with TAPUSCRIPT (23 pages in-4, in a white paper folder) with explanatory information on this collection of letters as well as the text of Charles OFAIRE’s replies. provenance Bibliothèque Dominique de VILLEPIN. Feux & flammes. Un itinéraire politique. I Les Voleurs de feu (28 November 2013, n° 145).
