A SPOTLIGHT ON THE PAINTERS OF POETIC REALITY

In 1949, journalist Gisèle d'Assailly brought together a group of eight artists - Maurice Brianchon, Christian Caillard, Jules Cavaillès, Raymond Legueult, Roger Limouse, Roland Oudot, André Planson and Kostia Terechkovitch - who, far from the fracas of Fauvism and the fractures of Cubism, had always affirmed their commitment to the search for a sense of color and harmony.

André Planson, one of the movement's leading figures, defines this "friendly group of happy painters" in the following terms: "We're almost all the same age, give or take three years [...]. What's more, we love and respect nature, and our forms of poetry are similar. Between Legueult and Caillard, between Oudot and Terechkovitch, for example, there are essential differences of conception and color. And yet, the same love of poetic Reality brings us together. [...] We're not a fighting generation, we don't choose extremes, but there's a kind of permanence between us that instinctively brings us together."

While the subjects tackled by the Réalité poétique painters are as diverse as the personalities who make up the group - interior or exterior genre scenes, landscapes, portraits or still lifes - they often reserve an important place for women, in turn models with often bare bodies, Parisians or Opera dancers. For Caillard and Limouse, the countries of the Maghreb and Africa are a source of inspiration in their own right, as in their brightly colored, often non-imitative compositions of Malagasy and Moroccan beauties.

The Un printemps moderne sale will give art lovers the opportunity to rediscover these works, which are above all a hymn to nature, to women and, more generally, to the simple things to which these painters knew how to infuse, through the accuracy and richness of their palette, a feeling of sincere joy and intense emotion.
