Ink and colors on silk, signed lower left 菖蒲, 约1930-1935年间 绢本设色,署名于左下方 PROVENANCE Collection privée, France 来源 法国 私人收藏 Vu Cao Dam was born in Hanoi in 1908 to a French-speaking Francophile father, who was appointed by the Vietnamese government to represent his country at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889. Brought up in a wealthy and erudite world, Vu Cao Dam soon entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi, founded in 1925 by the French painter Victor Tardieu, where he studied painting, drawing and sculpture from 1926 to 1931. Thanks to his teacher, he took part in the 1931 Paris Universal Exhibition, when he explored the capital and discovered part of France. He then decided to settle there. Initially acclaimed as a sculptor, receiving numerous commissions when he arrived in Paris, he also began painting on silk. In both areas, Vu Cao Dam's art was focused on the human figure; busts in one discipline, and charming genre scenes or religious subjects in the other. The works presented here date from the 1930s and are imbued with traditional Asian precepts As with Glaïeuls (Gladioli), the figure of the woman in the picture stands out against a neutral background. The simplicity of the layout emphasises the great beauty of the line. Subtle curves express the sensual forms of the body in one picture, and the ephemeral nature of blooming flowers in the other. While the composition of Glaïeuls is fairly classical, that of the Nu is much less so. The scene is seen slightly from above, so that the dozing girl’s body is shown clearly, enabling viewers to share the young woman’s intimate world and admire her youth and beauty for a fleeting moment. 武高谈于1908年生于河内,父亲不但会说法语与法国关系密切,1889年更受越南政府之托, 代表国家出席于巴黎举办的世界博览会。浸浴于文人和学者的世界,武高谈很快就进入由法国画家维克托‧塔迪厄(Victor Tardieu)所创办 的河南美术学院就读。1926年至1931年间,武除了在此习画之外,亦学习雕塑。在老师的支持与协助下,于1931年参予在巴黎举行的世界博览会。游历法国部分城市后,进而选择定居于此。初抵巴黎时,武高谈的雕塑技巧最先受到瞩目,也为他带来不少订单,同时他亦持续绢本绘画的创作。在这两个领域中,武高谈的绘画着重于人像的创作,同时亦有风俗民情及宗教题材等。本次上拍之作品皆是绘制于30年间,且循着亚洲传统艺术之足迹创作。主题无论是菖蒲或者是女子形象,背景的用色皆非常朴实素雅。简洁的构图突显了线条的美感。优雅的曲线完整呈现出人体美及盛开中花朵的稍纵即逝。如果将菖蒲的构图认定为是古典的,相形之下,能发现另一件裸女则较为新颖。微仰的视角,艺术家直接地展现了熟睡中年轻女子的身体,允许且邀请观者欣赏女子最隐密的模样,进而欣赏她青春美丽的容貌。
